Self-timed egg

I have to make an admission. I think boiling an egg is really, like, hard. Especially if you want to boil it exactly right. For me that's stiff in the white and thickly runny in the yolk.

But now modern technology takes the fun out of the guessing game. The British Egg Information Service has taken Egg Information to the next level: the egg that tells you when it's perfectly done!

See this article from the BIES itself, or this sound clip from National Public Radio (NPR).

And for my part, I had a lot of trouble until I learned the trick of putting the egg in cold water, then letting it warm up. This also usually prevents the egg from cracking. I time it 1,5-2 minutes from the water starts boiling. But when is it boiling? When the little bubbles come, or the big ones blub up? For that answer, see the bok Hvordan Koke Vann by Andreas Viestad. (Norwegian)
